What an App hole

It has been quite a revelation watching Nic grow to love Nokia's Lumia 800 and Windows Phone 7. The Lumia really is the handset that Microsoft needed, and in turn, the beautiful design and sleek lines of the Lumia 800 makes up in many ways for the awful hardware that was Nokia's last high-end Symbian foray, the N97.

We have been big fans of Windows Phone 7 since its launch, and last year's Mango update just made it even better Core to this is the fact that Microsoft didn't just try to replicate the way iOS and Android do things, but rather made its own mark with the Metro interface. I've actually been using a Windows Phone 7 handset as my personal phone for some months now, and as a day to day phone OS it is slick, intuitive and easy to use.

The biggest problem Microsoft has with Windows Phone though is the situation with Apps. While there are plenty of them to be had from the marketplace, you can almost guarantee that anything you actually need won't be available on Windows Phone 7.

Over the past month it seems that every time one of us goes to find an App there isn't a version for Windows Phone 7. As an example, a few of us in the office have started playing the Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO. Being security conscious types, we were keen to use the protection provided by an Authenticator, which generates a key used in conjunction with username and password when logging in (they are highly effective at preventing account hacking). For some reason EA don't ship the physical keyfobs to some nations, forcing antipodean gamers to use one of its smartphone Apps. Of course, these Apps are only available for iOS and Android.

Another, more general use example is Dropbox. We are pretty heavy Dropbox users, loving the convenience it provides and the multi-platform nature of cloud storage. Again, no Windows Phone 7 App can be found. We could use Skydrive, but given that all the other devices in our lives support Dropbox. its both frustrating and impractical to adopt another means of cloud storage.

This lack of the obvious is Windows Phone 7s Achilles heel. Apps are increasingly becoming a major part of the purchasing decision when upgrading phones, a window that only happens for most people every two years. Given the relatively low cost or free nature of most useful Apps transitioning platforms is only a mild financial inconvenience, but not being able to get access to something that is core to the way you use your smartphone is a much greater one. If Microsoft can't drive the creation of Apps like Dropbox, Smartr, Teamviewer or LogMeln then ii becomes harder and harder to recommend the OS.

Hopefully this will kick into gear once Metro starts turning up on ARM-based Windows 8 devices While it still isn't clear just whether Metro Apps in Windows 8 and Windows Phone 7 will share some kind of commonality. one would hope that it makes it much easier to port them between devices at the very least. If this doesn't happen then Microsoft will be squandering one of the best products it has.

Regain a Dead Smartphone

What should you do when your Smartphone decides to play dead? Resist the urge to throw it against the nearest wall and try one of these techniques instead.

Soft Reset

All phones have a soft reset function, which is similar to restarting your computer. Beware that performing a soft reset will cause you to lose any data that isn't saved, but you will retain information previously stored on your smartphone.

■ MOTOROLA BACKFLIP. Power the phone off. Remove and reinsert the battery, then power the phone back on.

■ ANDROID (OTHER). All remaining Android models use a simple power cycle to perform a soft reset. Just turn the phone off and then back on again.

■ BLACKBERRY (QWERTY KEYBOARD). Press and hold the ALT-CAP-DELETE key combination. The display goes black for a second and your BlackBerry resets.

■ BLACKBERRY (SURETYPE KEYBOARD). Press the ALT-CAP and Right Shift-DEL keys. When the screen goes blank, release the keys.

■ BLACKBERRY (TOUCHSCREEN). Turn the BlackBerry off and remove the battery for at least 30 seconds. Reinstall the battery and turn the device back on.

■ IPHONE (ALL MODELS). Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on the top of the iPhone and the Home button. Continue to hold both buttons (approximately 10 seconds) until the screen goes blank. You'll see the white Apple logo as the iPhone reboots.

■ NOKIA (ALL MODELS). Power the phone off and remove the battery for 30 seconds. Reinstall the battery and power the phone on. Alternately, you can enter the code *#7380# and select Yes.

■ PALM PRE. If the phone's menus are still active, select Device Info, Reset Options, then select Soft Reset. If the Palm Pre is locked up or frozen, hold the power button and cycle the ringer button on and off three times. If that doesn't work, press and hold the Orange, Sym, and R keys until the device reboots. Turn the phone off, remove the battery for 10 seconds, reinstall the battery, and power the phone up.

All other smartphones. You can generally perform a soft reset by powering the phone off, removing the battery for 30 seconds, and powering the phone back on.

Hard Reset
A hard reset is a last-ditch option that returns your phone to its factory settings, which means you will lose all data and installed applications. Before you perform a hard reset, remove the memory card from your phone; that way you can recover data from the card later.

AT&T TERRESTAR GENUS.
With the device turned off, press the red power key. When the TerreStar logo appears, press and hold the E-Power keys until a green checkmark appears in the lower-left corner. Release all keys. The device will power up and perform a factory reset.

ANDROID (ALL MODELS WITH FUNCTIONING MENU SYSTEMS).

One of the following menu-based systems for performing a hard reset should work, depending on the phone and version of Android. Open the application menu. Tap Settings, SD and Card Storage, Factory Data Reset, and follow the on-screen instructions.
• From the Home screen, tap Menu, Settings, Privacy, and Factory Data Reset, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
• From the Home screen, tap Menu, Settings, Security, and Factory Data Reset, and then follow the on-screen instructions.

When the device configuration screen appears, release all buttons. Use the Volume Up or Down button to move the selection to Factory Reset. Press the Camera button to select the Factory Reset option and start the reset process.

■ GOOGLE NEXUS ONE, NEXUS S. Turn the phone off. Press and hold Volume Down while you press and release the Power button. Use the Volume Down button to select Clear Storage from the list of options. Press the Power button, and confirm your selection by pressing the Volume Up button.

■ T-MOBILE COMET. If possible, back up your data to Google's servers by selecting Privacy from the Settings screen. Select the Back Up My Data option. When the backup is complete, return to the Settings screen and select Privacy and Factory Data Reset. When prompted, tap Reset Phone, then tap Erase Everything.

■ T-MOBILE G2X. If possible, back up your data to Google's servers by selecting Privacy from the Settings screen. Select the Back Up My Data option. When the backup is complete, power off the phone. Press and hold the Power/Lock-Volume Down keys for at least 15 seconds. The phone should turn back on and perform a factory reset. If the screen is frozen, or the phone doesn't turn back on, remove the battery, wait 30 seconds, then reinstall the battery and try again.

■ MOTOROLA DROID. Turn the phone off. Press and hold the Power-X keys to force the phone into recovery mode. Next, press and hold the Volume Up-Camera key to display the recovery menu. Select Wipe Data/Factory Reset from the menu, and then select Reboot Phone.

■ HTC ARRIVE, HD7, SURROUND. Press Start and tap the right-facing arrow. Tap Settings, About, and then tap Reset Your Phone. Tap Yes, and then tap Yes again.
If the screen is frozen, turn the device off. Press and hold the Volume Up-Down buttons and briefly press the Power key. When the screen displays instructions for resetting the device, release the Volume Up-Down buttons.

■ IPHONE (ALL MODELS). From the Home screen, tap Settings, General, Reset, and Reset All Settings. This action resets all preferences but retains applications and data. If that doesn't work, from the Home screen, tap Settings, General, Reset, Erase All Content, and Settings. This will delete all data and applications and return the iPhone to factory conditions.

■ NOKIA (ALL MODELS). With your phone powered on or in standby mode, type *#7370# and select Yes, when prompted. You may need your Lock Code for confirmation. The default lock code is 12345. If your phone doesn't turn on, try pressing the On/Off button, *, and 3 simultaneously.

■ PALM PRE. Open Device Info, tap Phone Reset Options, and then tap Full Erase twice. If your Palm Pre is frozen, and you are unable to use the menus to perform a reset, try running the latest version of webOS Doctor (ws.palm.com/webosdoctor /sorry.htm) to troubleshoot and reset the device. Then follow the on-screen instructions.

Nokia's Fall And Android's Rise

Google's handsets have dubbed iPhone-killers, but it's Nokia and its Symbian Operating System that has suffered most. Android's share of the smartphone market has reached from zero to a market-leading 36% in three years. Overall smartphone sales have doubled this period, with Google's OS picking up many of those new customers, alongside Apple's iPhone.

Nokia had been tipped to ditch Symbian for Android, but instead plumped for Microsoft's Windows 7 - but will it pay off, delay the inevitable decline, or even speed up the classic handset maker's fall?

Upgrade Firmware Nokia N73 To Nokia N73 Music Edition

If you already own the Nokia N73, you can update the firmware to the Music Edition by using the Nokia Software Update with a little trick. Retailers are just receiving the Nokia N73 Music Edition as this how-to is published, but you do not have to buy the new Nokia N73 Music Edition to take advantage of the new features. Read on to find out how to update the firmware.

Before you decide to update your Nokia N73 to the Music Edition, know that this may void your warranty and you run the risk of breaking your phone, like Darla. Is it worth taking the risk? Find out first what to expect in the new Nokia N73 Music Edition:

1. Idle Screen with new clock.
2. New Main Menu Music Icon.

3. New Default Themes.
4. New Music Player with Album Art.
5. Music Player audio settings (Stereo widening is super cool!!!)

6. Music Player Visualization - Oscilloscope

7. Music Player Visualization - Spectrum
8. Firmware Version: 3.0638.0.0.30

Now that you’ve seen how the Nokia N73 Music Edition differs from the standard Nokia N73, do you still want to do it? If so, this is how to update the firmware:

Download and install: Nemesis Service Suite and the latest Nokia Software Update.

  1. Connect your phone and wait for Windows to install the drivers.
  2. Open Nemesis Service Suite and click “Scan for new device” on the right-upper part of the window
  3. Click on the icon “Phone info”
  4. Click on “Scan”
  5. Change the product code to 0539343 and mark the case “Enable”.
  6. Press “Write”, and your phone’s product code will be changed (you might think that nothing happened, because the phone is still in normal mode, and the changing of the product code only takes a couple of seconds, but don’t worry, the product code changed !).
  7. Close Nemesis Service Suite and run the Nokia Software Update.
  8. Make sure not to touch the cable or the phone while your phone is updating or else you will break it!
  9. That’s it! When you restart your phone, it should now be the Nokia N73 Music Edition.
I just want to point out how risky this can be considering the future:
Say that you choose to change the product code to something else and then Nokia later decide to take the current product code away from NSU since they notice many people are changing this code….what will you do then if your phone goes dead?

You can no longer update the phone via NSU and if you turn to a Nokia servicepoint they will notice that your product code in the phone is different compare to the one on the label on the backside of the phone…this means that they most probably will deny to give you service since you have done something with the phone that isn´t allowed.

Next step, by a new phone !
I would say, very risky.

I found this list to update to what u want U cant go back to the earlier version without Flushing.

This is the EMEA version of the regular N73:

0527009 Euro 1
0529568 France
0529569 Alps

2) DONOT touch the phone/cable while update is going on
3) Keep the charger plugged in all the time
4) Take a backup of all the data
5) Do the backup on either on Saturday or Sunday night . This is because in case it becomes a brick u can go down to Mobile repair shop and get it reflashed :).
6) In case the update failed.. KEEP RETRYING..
7) If something is not working properly after the update do an update again.
